First Time Hearing

Published by at 1:01 pm under Open Chat Night

Describe your experience with hearing your voice for the first time.

I was one of the millions of people who viewed the YouTube video about Sarah Churman, a 29-year-old woman from Texas, hearing her own voice for the first time.  She has been hard of hearing since birth and could only sense vibration and loud noises through conventional hearing aids.  Until she received her Esteem implant, she had never heard her own voice.

I was amazed that she could speak very clearly even though she hadn’t been able to hear her own voice.  Thinking about it, if I speak softly, I cannot hear myself without my hearing aids, but I can feel the vibrations in my throat.  I wonder if that helps deaf and hard of hearing people speak clearly without hearing themselves.

At the next Wednesday Night’s Open Chat Night, share your thoughts on hearing the first time and if you’ve experienced it, what kind of impact it had on your life.
