ABC’s Family Switched At Birth Memorable Moments

Published by at 11:11 pm under Open Chat Night

One of my favorite TV shows, ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth,” continues to roll on new episodes in Season 3 this summer, and the stories get even more interesting and dramatic.

“Switched at Birth” is a story about two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital.  Bay, a hearing girl, grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother.  Meanwhile, Daphne, who became deaf at an early age, grew up with a single mother in a working-class neighborhood.  Things become more dramatic as the two families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girl’s identity.

While the show is more like a soap opera, it focuses a lot about the Deaf culture, use of ASL, and interactions between the deaf and hearing world in the school, family, and work settings.  I think the writers come up with great story lines to make it educational, entertaining, and spiced the life of these characters between the two worlds.

Some of my favorite moments is when Bay (hearing girl) is dating Emmett (deaf guy) and how they cope in the relationship.  Bay have learned sign language to communicate with Emmett and that just shows any hearing people can learn sign language if they make the effort.  Bay’s love for Emmett encouraged her to learn sign language and the Deaf culture to better communicate with him and others who are deaf or hard of hearing.
